She is the daughter of dentist father Jack Smith and homemaker mother Margaret Ellen. Jack was of Russian Jewish descent and Margaret was of English, Scottish, Irish, and Welsh heritage. Jaclyn was raised along with her brother Thomas Smith in her hometown in Texas. 

She completed her high school at Mirabeau B. Lamar High School in 1964. She was doing her psychology and drama major from Trinity University and dropped from college and moved to New York to join the Balanchine School of American Ballet.

Firstly, she was in a marital relationship with actor Roger Davis; they married on 29th November 1968 but divorced after 7 years on 15th January 1975. Then she tied the knot with actor Dennis Cole on 29th October 1978 and lived together for three years and ended the relationship on 23rd July 1981. The same year on 4th August she married cinematographer Anthony B. Richmond

With her third spouse, she has two children a son Gaston Richmond (19th March 1982), and a daughter Spencer Margaret Richmond (4th December 1985).  The couple got divorced in 1989 with sole custody of the two kids to Jaclyn.
