Actress Williams was born as Olivia Haigh Williams on 26 July 1968 in North London, England. Her father and mother were barristers. Williams holds British nationality and belongs to White ethnicity.

Williams attended the South Hampstead High School in North London. Later, she enrolled at Newnham College, Cambridge, from which she graduated with a degree in English literature. Further, she studied drama for two years at the Bristol Old Vic Theater School. After that, she worked in the Royal Shakespeare Company for three years that became the platform for her glorious acting career.

Olivia toured to the USA in 1995 to work in the production of Shakespeare's Richard III. In 1996, she landed her first significant screen role as Jane Fairfax in Emma. A year later, she made her film debut in The Postman, in which she worked as Abby alongside actor Kevin Coster.

In 1999, Williams played Bruce Willis' wife in M. Night Shyamalan's The Sixth Sense. The following year, she appeared as Madeliene in The Heart of Me which won her first British Independent Film Award for Best Actress.

In the upcoming years, she worked in numerous movies such as To Kill a King, Valiant, Flashbacks of a Fool, Sabotage, and Man Up among others.
