American actress, Catherine Keener is known for playing Maxine Lund in American fantasy drama film, Being John Malkovich and, nominated for Best Supporting Actress for Academy Award.

Keener has also appeared in numerous hit movies such as The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Into the Wild, Synecdoche, and New York. She has recently appeared in a 2017 American horror movie, Get Out. She is a former wife of American actor and musician, Dermot Mulroney

Early life and Education

Catherine Keener was born Catherine Ann Keener on 23 March 1959 in Miami, Florida, U.S. She is American and belongs to mixed ethnicity.

Keener is born to Evelyn Keener and Jim Keener, a manager of Mattress store in Hialeah, Florida. Her father is of Irish descent and her mother is of Lebanese descent.

Keener was raised in Roman Catholic along with her four siblings. Her sister, Elizabeth Keener is also an American actress and brother, Michael Keener is Priest.

Keener went to the Catholic schools and joined the Monsignor Edward Pace High School. She then enrolled at Wheaton College, in Norton, Massachusetts.

During her junior year at Wheaton College, Keener made her first theatrical production in Wendy Wasserstein play Uncommon Women and Others.

Keener enrolled in a theater course, majoring in English and history. She graduated with B.A. from Wheaton College in 1983.

Career

Catherine Keener debuted in 1986 American romantic comedy-drama film, About Last Night as Cocktail Waitress. The following year, she appeared in American television legal drama series, L.A. Law.

In 1987, Keener was cast as Lt. Cricket Sideris in American television series, Ohara. Between 1988 and 1989, she worked in American drama television series, Knightwatch as Rebecca.

After that, Keener grabbed her first leading role as Yvonne in 1991 American film Johnny Suede, starring Brad Pitt, Calvin Levels, among others. Her performances in the film earned her first Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best Female Lead.

The following year, Keener featured in American road film, Thelma & Louise, starring Harvey KeitelSusan Sarandon, and Geena Davis.

Keener appeared in the number of movies, 'The Gun in Betty Lou's Handbag', 'The Cemetery Club', 'Living in Oblivion', 'Walking and Talking', 'Boys, Box of Moonlight. She also appeared in television series including 'If These Walls Could Talk', 'How and Why' and many more. 

In 2001, Keener was cast in Nicole Holofcener’s American comedy-drama, Lovely and Amazing, co-starred with Edward Norton. The next year, she worked in four movies, Adaptation, Full Frontal, Death to Smoochy and Simone.

Keener played in 2005 drama film, The Ballad of Jack and Rose with Camilla Belle, Daniel Day-Lewis, and Paul Dano. She won two awards, Boston Society of Film Critics Award and Los Angeles Film Critics Association Award for Best Supporting Actress.

Keener also won Los Angeles Film Critics Association Award for her performance in political thriller film, The Interpreter, starring Sean PennNicole Kidman, and Jesper Christensen.

Keener’s performances in The 40-Year-Old Virgin won her Boston Society of Film Critics Award and Los Angeles Film Critics Association Award for Best Supporting Actress.

Keener won Boston Society of Film Critics Award for Best Supporting Actress and was Nominated for Oscar for Best Supporting Actress and a BAFTA for Best Actress in a Supporting Role among many other wins and nomination for the 2005 Biographical film, Capote

In 2006, Keener acted in comedy-drama film, Friends with Money, starring Jennifer Aniston, Joan Cusack, Frances McDormand, Jason Isaacs, Scott Caan and others.

Keener then starred in An American Crime, and Into the Wild. Both movies succeed to earned her number of Nomination including, Golden Globe Award for Best Actress, Broadcast Film Critics Association Award and many more.  

In 2008, Keener worked in 'Hamlet 2', 'What Just Happened' and 'Genova'. The same year, she played in Synecdoche, New York, which won her Gotham Award for Best Ensemble Cast and, Independent Spirit Robert Altman Award.  

In 2009, Keener featured in two movies 'The Soloist' and 'Where the Wild Things Are', Nominated for Saturn Award for Best Actress. The next year, she also worked for Please Give, Cyrus, Trust, and Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief.

Between 2011 and 2017, Keener was cast in numbers of moves including Peace, Love & Misunderstanding, A Late Quartet, Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa, Elephant Song, and We Don't Belong Here.

In 2017, Keener appeared in the American Horror movie, Get Out. She was cast alongside Daniel Kaluuya Allison Williams, Bradley Whitford, and Caleb Landry Jones, among others.

Personal Life

Catherine Keener is possibly single at the present. She was married to Dermot Mulroney. The duo exchanged a vow in 1990 at an intimate ceremony in the presence of their closed ones and family members. They first met on the set of Survival Quest in 1989.

The couple had a son, Clyde (born on 1999). However, the pair failed to handle their relationship and citing some irreconcilable differences. They separated in May 2005. They filed a divorce in June 2007. But their divorce was finalized after six months on December 19, 2007.

After divorcing, Kenner, Dermot Mulroney married Tharita Cutulle in 2008. The duo is proud parents of two daughters, Mulroney (born 2008) and Sally June Mulroney (born 2009).

Catherine also linked to American-Spanish actor, Benicio Del Toro. They have worked together in an upcoming American action-crime-thriller film, Sicario 2: Soldado. However, the duo considered one another as good friends.

Keener shared a good bonding with Bradd Pitt. Their friendship emerged after they starred together in 1991's movie, Johny Suede. They often attended one another film premieres and also support each other. 

In 1991, Kenner appeared in one of the scenes of Thelma & Louise as the wife of Harvey Keitel's but the scene was later deleted from the movie. However, it is now available at the special edition DVD extras.
