Academy Award-winning British actress, Sally Hawkins is popularly known for her roles in movies such as Happy-Go-Lucky, Blue jasmine, and The Shape of Water and the TV series, Persuasion.

She is also well recognized for Paddington, Maudie, and Made in Dagenham among others.

Movie debut

Hawkins made her movie debut in 1996 with the short movie, Mirror, Mirror. Later she appeared in an uncredited role in the movie, Star Wars: Episode I- The Phantom Menace. Before pursuing a career on the big screen, she used to do plays in theaters.

Her works in movies and series helped her to win several awards like Satellite Awards, Golden Globe Awards, Empire Awards, and National Society of Film Critics’ Awards among others.

Early Life

Sally Hawkins was born Sally Cecilia Hawkins to Jacqui Hawkins and Colin Hawkins (author) on 27th April 1976 in Dulwich, London under the birth sign Taurus.

Hawkins is British as per nationality and ethnicity wise she's of Irish Catholic ancestry. Her parents raised her with her brother, Finbar Hawkins (a producer) in Blackheath.

Education

At the age of three, Hawkins developed an interest in acting when she went to the circus show. She later started doing theater plays despite her interest in comedy.

Hawkins attended James Allen’s Girls’ School in Dulwich. In 1998, she graduated from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.

Sally Hawkins' Career

Sally Hawkins, at the initial phase of her career, performed in several theater plays. In 1998, she acted in Accidental Death of an Anarchist at Battersea Arts Center. The same year, she also performed as Juliet Capulet in Romeo and Juliet at York Theater Royal.

Hawkins then worked in several theaters plays like The Dybbuk, The Cherry Orchard, Much Ado About Nothing, and Constellations among others.

In 2010, Hawkins debuted in Broadways from Mrs. Warren's Profession at the American Airlines Theater.

Hawkins made her TV debut in 1999 on BBC One’s medical drama series, Casualty. The following year, she acted in the medical soap opera, Doctors.

Particularly, she is popular for her role in Persuasion where she shared the screen with Rupert Penry-Jones, Anthony Head, and Alice Krige among others.

Hawkins also worked in several radio plays. In 2002, she made her debut on radio on BBC Radio 4’s audience sketch show, Concrete Cow. Two years later, she acted in BBC Radio 4’s audience sitcom, Think the Unthinkable.

Hawkins's other radio works are The Cenci Family, War with the Newts, The Party Line, Cut to the Heart, and Book at the Bedtime: The Girl on the Train among others.
