Paapa Essiedu was born in 1990 in Ghana. His parents separated when he was young and he moved to England with his mother while his father stayed behind and got remarried. He was raised in East London by his mother, where he attended Forest School in Walthamstow.
Despite aspiring to become a doctor, he found his true calling in acting and got accepted into the prestigious Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, where he was peers with his future I May Destroy You co-star, Michaela Coel.
Career
Paapa Essiedu started his career as a theatre actor and joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2012. He played Fenton in the play, The Merry Wives of Windsor, for the company. He has since gone on to perform in plays like Outside on the Street at the Pleasance Theatre, Black Jesus at the Finborough Theatre, Romeo and Juliet at the Tobacco Factory, You For Me For You at the Royal Court Theatre, and Hamlet and King Lear, both at the Royal Shakespeare Company.
Essiedu's on-screen debut came as Roy in the Channel 4 black comedy-conspiracy thriller series, Utopia. He played The Duke of Burgundy in the televised National Theatre broadcast of the play Kind Lear.
