Winkler is the son of mother Ilse Anna Marie Winkler (b.1993-d.2002) and father Harry Irving Winkler (b.1903-d.1995). His parents moved from Berlin, Germany to the United States in 1939 on the eve of the Second World War.
His mother was a homemaker and his father was a lumber company president. His parents raised him with his sister Beatrice Winkler in the traditions of Conservative, Judaism.
When Winkler was young, he was anxious about his undiagnosed dyslexia (reading disorder) due to which he scored a poor grade in his school. His father used to punished him for his difficulties in school and used to call him a ''dumb dog.''
Winkler attended McBurney School from where he graduated in 1963. In 1963, he earned a B.A. degree from Emerson College.
