Emmy Award winner Eileen Atkins is an English actress and screenwriter. She gained fame from her role in television series Cranford, The Unexpected Man and Honour. She has also created Upstairs Downstairs and The House of Elliot.

Study At Latymer's Grammar School

Eileen June Atkins was born on 16th June 1934 in Lower Clapton, London, England. She belongs to Caucasian ethnicity and holds English citizenship.

Eileen's father Arthur Thomas Atkins worked as a gas meter reader while her mother Annie Ellen Elkins was a barmaid. She was raised along with her sister Judi Dench.

In 1945, she joined in Latymer's Grammar School where she graduated in 1950. She then studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama where she completed her graduation in 1953.

Won Primetime Emmy Awards From Her Role

Before coming in television and films, Atkins worked in a theater company called in Guild Players Repertory Company in 1952. While working in the stage, she got her debut role in the television series Hilda Lessways in 1959.

In 1968, she got her first role in a movie titled Inadmissible Evidence. For her performance in the 2007 BBC drama series, Cranford, Atkins was nominated for numerous awards including Gloden Globe Awards, winning a Primetime Emmy Award for outstanding supporting actress in a miniseries or a movie.

The actress has also worked in numerous series like Pscyhoville, The Crown and Upstairs Downstairs. She last appeared in the 2017 movie Paddington 2. She continued to play the role of Ruth Ellingham in the 2019 television series Doc Martin.

Eileen Atkins is living her life single after the death of her husband Bill Shepard who was a producer by profession.

The former couple had tied the knot on 2nd February 1978, and they were in a happy marital relationship until the producer pa s sed away on 24th June 2016.

Before marrying Bill, she was married to actor Julian Glover. The two exchanged wedding vows in 1957 but nearly after a decade of marriage, they got divorced in 1966.
