Robert Goulet is a late American singer and actor of French Canadian descent. He rose to stardom after playing Sir Lancelot in Broadway musical Camelot opposite Broadway stars Richard Burton and Julie Andrews. Robert Goulet has won Grammy Awards and Tony Awards in his six-decade-long career.

Actor and singer Robert Goulet was born Robert Gérard Goulet on November 26, 1933, in Lawrence, Massachusetts, USA. He was born to his father, Georges Andre Goulet, and his mother, Jeanette Gauthier Goulet. He had a sister Claire Goulet. Both of his parents worked in mills-his father was also an amateur singer and wrestler.

Goulet's father died when he was only 13. After the incident, he and his mother and his sister Claire moved to Girouxville, Alberta, and spent the rest of his teenage years in Canada. After several years, they relocated to Edmonton, where he attended the voice schools and later became a radio announcer for CKUA.

Goulet competed in CBC Television's Pick The Stars in 1952, where he became the semifinalist. Later, he appeared on the shows like Singing Stars of Tomorrow, Juliette, and Opportunity Knocks, among others.

Robert Goulet's Career

Robert Goulet got his breakthrough after he met the lyricist and librettist Alan Jay Lerner and composer Frederick Loewe who cast him in Lancelot, the stage production of the musical Camelot. His performance led him to land his debut role in a Broadway production.

After spending several years on Broadway, Robert made his film debut in 1962 as a voice artist, voicing the character "Jaune-Tom" on Gay Purr-ee. He also worked as the voiceover artist in the films like The Daydreamer and Taking the Fifth Grade.

In 1963, Goulet won the acclaimed Grammy Award for Best New Artist. Later, he won his first Tony Award for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in 1968 in a Musical for his performance as Jacques Bonnard in The Happy Time, a musical by Kander and Ebb.

Goulet sang the Canadian National Anthem in the opening of WrestleMania VI at the SkyDome in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, on April 1, 1990. Later in the late '90s, he lent his voice to Wheezy, the Penguin, singing a new version of You've Got a Friend in Me in Toy Story 2.

Robert Goulet's Personal Life

Renowned actor and singer Robert Goulet was married three times before his death in 2007. He was first married to Louise Longmore from 1956 to 1963. The couple had one daughter Nicolette who died on April 17, 2008.

After his divorce from his first wife, he married Carol Lawrence, with whom he shared two sons; Christopher Goulet and Michael Goulet. He and actress Carol Lawrence divorced in 1981. A year later, he married his third wife, Vera Chochorovska Novak. The lovebirds remained married until the actor passed away in 2007. They didn't have any children together.

Death

Goulet was hospitalized in Las Vegas on September 30, 2007, where he was diagnosed with fatal idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a rare and rapidly progressive condition. It was determined he wouldn't survive without an immediate lung transplant, after which he was transferred to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in LA on October 13.

On October 30, 2007, a month after he was hospitalized, he died from pulmonary fibrosis at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. After his death, theater marquees in New York and North America were dimmed in his memory a day after the death.
