Award-Winning Food Critic, Jonathan Gold Pa s ses Away At 57-Cause Of Death Revealed To Be Cancer

  • Legendary LA food critic, Jonathan Gold died.
  • His wife, Laurie Ochoa announced her husband; Gold died of pancreatic cancer at St. Vincent Medical Center on Saturday evening.
  • Gold was diagnosed with the rare type of pancreatic cancer earlier this month.

The first restaurant critic to win the Pulitzer Prize, and the Los Angeles Times restaurant critic, Jonathan Gold died on Saturday, 21st July. He was 57 at the time of death.

The LA Times reported the food critic who was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer earlier this month died of the disease. His wife Laurie Ochoa reported Gold took his last breath at St. Vincent Medical Center on Saturday evening.

Laura Gabbert, director of City of Gold, the 2015 doc u mentary about the critic, expressed her sorrow on Gold's demise. She said,

I can't imagine the city without him. It just feels wrong. I feel like we won't have our guide, we won't have the soul. It's such a loss. I can't wrap my head around it still.

Gold's family friend and a former editor of food magazine Lucky Peach, Peter Meehan said he shared a restaurant meal with Gold more than with anyone else outside his immediate family for last six years. He also remembered him as "conduit for the stories of Los Angeles."

Meanwhile, the LA Mayor, Eric Garcetti released a statement conducting their sorrows over the veteran food critic's death. He said,

There will never be another like Jonathan Fold, who will forever be our brilliant, indispensable guide through the culinary paradise that is Los Angeles.

He added,

Jonathan earned worldwide acclaim as a food critic, but he possessed the soul of a poet whose words helped readers everywhere understand the history and culture of our city.

Gold started writing about the foods for the LA Weekly since the 1984 LA Olympics when the huge crowd of people flooded into LA. Where at the time almost all of the LA restaurants were rooted in French cuisine, Gold introduced a new trend which has developed into its own cuisine now.

The heartbreaking news of the veteran food critic comes just weeks after the food world lost another legendary chef Anthony Bourdain. He took his life hanging in a hotel bathrobe with a belt on June 8.

The late food critic, Gold is survived by his wife Laurie Ochoa, former editor-in-chief of LA Weekly and their two children.
