American playwright, Mark Medoff whose Children of a Lesser God won Olivier and Tony Awards, died on 23rd April, at the age of 79 in Las Cruces, New Mexico.
According to Mark’s daughter, Jessica Bunchman, Mark died in a hospice all surrounded by his family members. It’s been a long time since he had been battling with multiple myeloma, cancer, and renal failure.
Mark, who started his professional career in the early 1970s, has written thirteen plays, and written, producer or directed nineteen movies. However, he is best known for a tale of a troubled love affair between deaf woman and speech teacher, Children of a Lesser God.
The Broadway revival last year of Children of a Lesser God starred former Miss Deaf America, Lauren Ridloff and Joshua Jackson. Lauren even earned a Tony nomination.
Mark’s work is often linked with social issues from animal testing and AIDS in the drama Prymate, disorders in When You Comin’ Back, and poverty in the 1992 movie City of Joy.
Mark was married twice in his life. There is no detail information regarding his first marriage and wife. However, after divorcing the first wife, he got married to his second wife, Stephanie Thorne in 1972.
Mark and Stephanie were married for around forty-seven years until his death in 2019. The pair shared three children; three daughters together.
