Jan Smithers was born Karin Jan Smithers on 3rd July 1949 in Woodland Hills, California. Her father was a lawyer, while her mother was a homemaker. Smithers had three sisters, but she lost her elder sister in a car accident.

She went to the 'William Howard Taft Charter High School' in California. Then, she joined the Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles. During her high school days, she got into a terrible car accident and got her chin severely injured.
