David Oakes was born Rowan David Oakes on 14 October 1983 in Fordingbridge, Hampshire. Oakes is British by nationality and belongs to Caucasian ethnicity.

His performance in Shakespeare in Love helped him to get nominated for Oliver Award. Oakes then appeared in several theaters plays. Besides, he also directed numerous theater pieces like Harold Pinter's The Dumb Waiter and Martin McDonagh's Beauty Queen of Leenane.

The versatile actor started his TV career in 2008 from BBC One's Bonekickers and BBC Four's Walter's War. Oakes' breakthrough came in 2010 in miniseries, The Pillars of the Earth which was based on the novel of Ken Follett of the same name. The miniseries starred Hayley Atwell, Ken Follett, and Eddie Redmayne.
The following year, Oakes worked as the second son of Rodrigo who use to behave recklessly, Juan Borgia in the historical-fictional TV series, The Borgias where he has appeared alongside, Jeremy Irons. He shared the screen with Holliday Grainger, Jeremy Irons, and Francois Arnaud.
