She spent her childhood in Ottawa and later moved to the US to study at Yale University. She graduated from the University in 1990 with a B.A. degree in English. She debated as a member of the Yale Debate Association on the American Parliamentary Debate Association.
Later, Lithwick joined Stanford University to study law. She graduated with a J.D. (Juris Doctor) degree in 1996.

Dahlia Lithwick started her career after graduating from law school working in a family law firm located in Reno, Nevada, USA.
Then in 1996, she worked as a clerk for Judge Procter Hug who was working in United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Then she appeared regularly on The Al Franken Show as a guest.
