Mars grew up in the Waikiki neighborhood of Honolulu. His father Peter Hernandez is of half Puerto Rican and half Jewish descent. His mother Bernadette “Bernie” San Pedro Bayot was of Filipino and Spanish descent.

Mars belonged to the family whose roots were actively involved in the music industry. His father was a percussionist and has performed Little Richard rock and roll music. His mother was a singer as well as a dancer. Belonging to the musical family background, exposed him to a diverse mix of genres such as reggae, rock, hip-hop, and R&B.

Mars was nicknamed Bruno by his father at the age of two as he resembled the legendary wrestler, Bruno Sammartino. He has five siblings altogether.

Mars started performing with his family band “The Love Notes at the age of four and was very popular for impersonation of Elvis Presley, often being called as “Little Elvis”. To officially start his mainstream music career Bruno moved to Los Angeles after high school graduation adopting his stage name as Bruno Mars.
