Oscar-Winning Director Bernardo Bertolucci Dies At 77

  • The Last Tango in Paris director Bernardo Bertolucci died in Rome at 77.
  • His spokesperson confirmed his death to BBC saying he took his last breath at his home surrounded by his family members.
  • Director Bertolucci had been battling cancer for a while and was ill for a short time before he bid farewell.

Reputed Italian director Bernardo Bertolucci has died. The Last Tango in Paris director died in Rome at 77.

A spokesperson to the late director confirmed he died of Cancer after a short illness. The spokesperson reported Bertolucci took his last breath at his home surrounded by his family members.

Known for his bold visual style, Bertolucci won two Oscars for directing and co-writing The Last Emperor. His last work as a director was Me and You which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2012.

Born on 16 March 1941, in Parma, Italy, Bertolucci started his career as an a s sistant director to Pier Paolo Pasolini on his film Accattone in 1961. A year later, he directed his first feature La Commare Secca.

Later, he worked on the Revolutino and The Spider's Stratagem, however, it was Last Tango which brought him to the stardom.

Celebrities like Antonio Banderas, Jim Jarmusch, and Clean Bandit took to their Twitter to pay tribute to the late legendary director. Jim Jarmusch wrote addressing the recent death of English director Nicolas Roeg in his tweet where he wrote: "A sad few days as we've just lost two huge inspirations: Nicolas Roeg and Bernardo Bertolucci."
