Mathew Canavan: Third Australian Politician Leaves Senate
Before he quit the cabinet on Tuesday, the former minister for resources and Northern Australia, Matthew Canavan, claimed his mother got him the Italian citizenship without his consent or knowledge. Italian Immigration experts, however, claimed that parents cannot apply for Italian citizenship on their children's behalf.
He is the third Australian politician to suffer the country's little-known dual citizenship clause in two weeks; two Green party senators Larissa Watters and Scott Ludlam also resigned a week ago. Matt left the Senate on 25th July 2017 after discovering he had an Italian Citizen as well which he claimed was given to him without any knowledge.

The Australian constitution bars anyone whoever holds citizenship in another country from standing for election. While speaking at a press briefing in Brisbane, Matt described his mother accidentally applied for Italian citizenship for him in 2006. She only informed him about the citizenship on 18th July.
He stated:
“I was not born in Italy and I have never been to Italy. To my knowledge have never been set foot in an Italian consulate or emba s sy. Until last week, I had no suspicion that I could possibly be an Italian citizen”.
Matthew told journalists he would be leaving cabinet as well as the ministry while the problem is getting resolved, but he would not leave the Parliament.
