The Former Nauru President And Leader Of Nauru 19, Sprent Dabwido, Has Died In Australia, Where He Was Being Treated For Cancer.

Sprent Dabwido was instrumental in overseeing the re-opening of Nauru’s detention facilities while president in 2012 before losing power back in 2014. Now, he is no more with us.

Sprent pa s sed away at the age of 46 after battling with nasopharyngeal cancer. He was first diagnosed with cancer back in April 2018.

In the statement released by fellow Nauru 19 member and politician Matthew Batsiua confirmed his death news and expressed his grief of losing him. Furthermore, Matthew revealed that Sprent died happy surrounded by the people who loved him dearly. He added:

I can say Sprent died the way he lived,

Earlier this month, Sprent fled to Australian and even begged the Australian Government for the political asylum as he required medical treatment which he insisted his government had gone out its way to deny it.

Mathew even accused the current Nauruan Government of leading to Sprent’s death. He said:

Today, the Government and the MPs who have supported them have the blood of a former president on their hands.

Matthew also expressed his disappointment for refusing a pa s sport to travel to visit Sprent while he was being treated. He said:

The Nauru Government refused us pa s sports despite a request from myself and others to visit Sprent before his death.

Even though the government prohibited him from attending a commitment ceremony with his partner Luci in Sydney, they stayed in contact via the social media and phone.

Before death, Sprent was fighting a legal battle in Nauru that was before the court appeal in the long-running Nauru 19 case.
