Thandie Newton was born as Thandie Melaine Newton. She was born on 6 November 1972 in London, England. She is the daughter of a Zimbabwean mother Nyasha and a British father Nick. Her mother is a health worker and her father is a laboratory technician and artist.

Newton is an English actress. She has enacted in a number of American and British films including Mision Impossible II, Run Fatboy, W., The Pursuit of Happiness, Crash, Good Deeds, 2012, Norbit and For Colored Girls.

The meaning of her name Thandiwe that means beloved. For her mother, Newton is a Shona princess. At TED conference Newton said that when at age of 5 she was conscious that she was black and did not fit and also that she was not normal.

She grew up in London with her parents and brother. She attended Tring Park School for the Performing Arts for studying dance. At the age of 16, she got the chance to audition for her first film. From 1992-95 she went to Downing College, Cambridge to study social anthropology where she secured 2.1

Newton debuted her acting career in a feature film Flirting in 1991. In 1994, she appeared in a horror film Interview with the Vampire alongside Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise

She then portrayed Sally Hemings in the French-American drama film Jefferson in Paris produced by the Merchant-Ivory production. Following, she featured in a lead role in a film Demme’s Beloved (1998). The film also featured Oprah Winfrey and Danny Glover in a starring role. 

She then enacted in an action film Mission: Impossible II (2000) starring opposite Tom Cruise - the second installment of Mission Impossible franchises.

Her next films The Chronicles of Riddick and Crush came out in 2004. Newton received a BAFTA award in Best Supporting Actress category through a film Crush. In 2006, she played Linda Gardner- the wife of the lead character Chris Gardner played by Will Smith- in The Pursuit of Happiness. In 2007, she did two comedy films: Norbit and Run Fat Boy. She enacted in Oliver Stone’s film Biopic movie President George W. Bush in 2008.

In 2009, she portrayed US President’s First Daughter Laura Wilson in a disaster film 2012. In 2012, she did a romantic film Good Deeds and Rogue in 2013. She appeared in a crime-comedy film Gringo and space western film Solo: A Star Wars Story in 2018.

Her husband, Oliver ‘Ol’ Parker, is an English screenwriter and director. He began his acting career in the theatre. He spent some years at a theater and pursued her career as a stand-up comedian. He then started writing scripts for films. In 2000, he wrote and produced a comedy film It Was an Accident.
