Synopsis

Seamus Coleman is a professional football player who plays as the captain for the Irish national football team. He also plays in the right back position for the English Premier League club, Everton.

Playing for the Everton since January 2009, he was the team member of Nations Cup winner in 2011. Coleman was also announced as the FAI under 21 International Player of the Year for the year 2009 and 2010. He has spent most of his career at Everton.

Early Life

Seamus Coleman was born on 11th of October, 1988 at Killybegs in the Republic of Ireland. He is an Irish by nationality. He is the son of Máire and Henry Coleman.

Coleman grew up with his parents and two brothers, Francis and Stephen. Younger brother Stephen (also known as Stevie) has cerebral palsy and he was part of the Irish team which won the bronze medal at the 2003 Special Olympics World Summer Games.

Coleman got his early education from St. Catherine's Vocational School. He is a loyal supporter of  Donegal senior football team and the local GAA team, Na Cealla Beaga. He started his career with his hometown team Killybegs.

Career

Seamus Coleman plays in the right back and also in the right midfield position. He has played in the U-21 as well as the U-23 team for Ireland. Coleman made an international debut in a U-21 friendly against Sweden in the year 2008. In 2006, he was signed for Sligo Rovers.

Coleman was signed to Everton for £40 thousand in the end of January 2009. Other teams like Celtic, Birmingham City, and Ipswich Town had shown interest in him at that time.

On 8th of February 2011, Coleman won his first full cap for Ireland in the game against Wales. Seamus Coleman earned a moment of pride for his country when he wore the captain's armband and led Ireland to the unexpected victory over Italy in the group stages. He was named as Everton's outstanding young performer in the year 2011.

With his consistent performance, Coleman became a regular for Everton in the 2013/14 season. He made a total of 41 appearances and scored seven goals in total. With his impressive show, he bagged the Club’s Player of the Year and Players’ Player of the Year honors. He was also awarded as the PFA Team of the Year.

In June 2014, Coleman was awarded another five and half year contract. Followed by that, he got featured for 42 times in the next season in which he scored five goals. In the season of 2015/16, he featured for 34 times. In Euro 2016, Coleman wore the captain's armband twice and was successful to take the Irish team to the Knockout stages. 

Recently, Coleman had a serious injury playing against Wales in the World Cup qualifiers. He will be out for about 6 months according to the medical reports.

Personal life

Seamus Coleman is happily married to his long-term girlfriend, Rachel Cunningham. Rachel is his high school sweetheart and dat ed each other for 11 years before getting married.

The wedding took place in June of 2015 at St. Mary of the Visitation Church in Killybegs in front of 280 guests, family, and friends. There was also the appearances of his teammates including James McCarthy,  Aidan McGeady, David Meyler, James McClean and his girlfriend Erin O’Connor.  

The couple has a daughter named Lilly and she was born in February 2016. Coleman lives a happy life with his wife and family.
