Career Struggles
Downey has been arrested several times for drug-related charges (using cocaine, he r o i n, and marijuana) from 1996 to 2001. He tried all the possible way to stop himself from taking drugs, but every time it got worst. In 1999 explaining to judges, Downey said,
"It's like I have a shotgun in my mouth, and I've got my finger on the trigger, and I like the taste of the gun metal."
Downey also stated he was on drugs since the age of 8 because of his father and that time he had no idea about its consequences. In 1996, Robert Downey Jr. arrested while he was speeding down Sunset Boulevard for possession of cocaine, he r o i n, and an unloaded .357 Magnum handgun.
After a month of this incident, he broke into one of his neighbor's house and found asleep in the bedroom under the influence of a controlled substance. He was charged with three years probation and required to undergo drug testing.
In 1997, Downey spent six months in Los Angeles county prison for missing one of the court-ordered drug tests. In 1999, he missed the drug test for the second time for which the judge declared a punishment of three years at the California Substance Abuse Treatment Facility and State Prison in Corcoran, California. Due to this reason his film ventures had wrapped and even closed to release whereas he was allowed to complete the filming of, 'In Dreams.'
After imprisonment, his career took a downfall as he was fired from several projects including NBC animated series, 'God, the Devil, and Bob.' In 2000, Downey was unexpectedly released on condition of posting $5,000 bail, as the judge stated that his combined time in prison(first arrest in 1996) had qualified for his early release.
After a week of his freedom, he was cast in the TV series, 'Ally McBeal' and his performance was appreciated by the audiences and critics.
Downey received the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor in a mini-series or television film for 'Ally McBeal.' He also sang a duet, "Every Breath You Take" with Sting in an episode of the series. However, he claimed his performance was overrated,
"It was my lowest point in terms of addictions. At that stage, I didn't give a f** K whether I ever acted again."
Downey was to play the role of Hamlet in a Los Angeles production in 2001. Before the end of final episode on Ally McBeal, he was again arrested for using drugs. The police responded to the anonymous 911 call and searched his rooms at Merv Griffin's Hotel and Givenchy Spa in Palm Springs, California, and they found him under the influence of controlled substance with possession of cocaine and Valium.
In 2001, while on parole, he was again taken into custody for suspicion of being under the influence of drugs in LA and found him wandering barefoot in Culver City. However, he was released after few hours despite the fact that he had cocaine in his blood.
The arrest led him getting fired from the 'Ally McBeal,' and he lost a role in the high-profile film America's Sweethearts. Mel Gibson also canceled the Hamlet production due to Downey's recent incarceration.
Robert Downey Jr. pleaded no contest to his charges and sent into drug rehabilitation and was put on a three years probation with the aim of helping nonviolent drug offenders overcome their addictions instead of sending them to jail.
In December 2000 for People magazine article, Bad to Worse, Downey's stepmom, Rosemary told, he had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder a few years ago and added his manic depression was
"the reason he has a hard time staying sober. What hasn't been tried is medication and intensive psychotherapy"
In the same article, Dr. Manijeh Nikakhtar, LA-based psychiatrist revealed in 1999, she received a letter from Downey during his time at Corcoran II, asking to advise for his condition.
However, in March 2007 issue of Esquire, Robert Downey Jr. denied the fact of being bipolar, he even stated he received several calls from "the Bipolar Association" questioning him about his condition.
Career Success
Downey, overcoming many hurdles in his career, he finally recovered from his dependency on drugs and returned to working as an actor. In August 2001, he got his first post-rehab acting job in the Elton John's single video, I Want Love.
With the help of his friend, Mel Gibson, Downey succeeded to return to the big screen, Gibson paid Downey's insurance bond for 'The Singing Detective' (2003). He returned to the mainstream with thrill film, 'Gothika,' however, his 40 percent salary was withheld until after production wrapped as insurance against his addictive behavior.
Later Downey appeared in a number of movies including 'A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints,' 'Good Night,' 'Good Luck,' 'A Scanner Darkly,' and 'Zodiac.' In 2004, he talked about his addictive behavior on Oprah Winfrey show.
In 2006, Downey made his comeback in small screen with a guest role in one of the episodes of 'Family Guy.' He also signed with Harper Collins to write a memoir which included his highs and lows. However, in 2008 he canceled the book without further comment.
Downey successfully re-established himself in the film industry but didn't taste the blockbuster till 2008 appearing in 'Iron Man' and 'Tropic Thunder.' After the success, the national and international audiences recognized him as Iron Man.
Later Downey was cast in 'The Avengers' as Iron Man. He reprised his role again in 'Iron Man 2' (2010), 'Avengers: Age of Ultron' (2015), 'Captain America: Civil War' (2016), and Spider-Man: Homecoming' (2017).

His most successful singing venture till the date was a remake of the 1973 Joni Mitchell's Christmas song "River."The song was included on the album of 'Ally McBeal: A Very Ally Christmas' in 2000.
Political Views
Downey stated in 2008 interview that his political view changed after his time in prison,
"I have a really interesting political point of view, and it's not always something I say too loud at dinner tables here, but you can't go from a $2,000-a-night suite at La Mirage to a penitentiary and really understand it and come out a liberal. You can't. I wouldn't wish that experience on anyone else, but it was very, very, very educational for me and has informed my proclivities and politics ever since."
In 2015 when asked about his previous statement during the promotion of Avengers: Age of Ultron, he denied that it reflected any longstanding beliefs on his part, and corrected, "I wouldn't say that I'm a Republican or a liberal or a Democrat."
Robert Downey Jr. is also on the board of the Anti-Recidivism Coalition. He along with other celebs appeared in a commercial, encouraging people to vote in the 2016 election.
