Piero Tosi, better known for receiving five Academy Award nominations during his eminent career, died on Saturday, 10th August. He was 92 years old.
As per the Facebook post by Franco Zeffirelli Foundation, he died in Rome. The foundation released a statement revealing that Piero will be buried in Franco Zeffirelli’s family tomb, next to the master.
Piero is widely known for creating a dazzling array of clothing for some of some controversial movies; from the ancient Greek garb in Medea to the stylish suits in Death in Venice to sadomasochistic costume in The Night Porter.
During five decades-long professional career, Piero received numerous honors including three David di Donatello Awards and two BAFTAs.
He was won Academy Award nominations for The Leopard, La Cage aux Folles, Death in Venice, La Traviata, and Ludwig. He only earned nominations until 2013 when he received an honorary Oscar.
Italian actress Claudia Cardinale accepted the award on his behalf wearing his designs in ten movies.
Milena Canonero, who won Academy Awards four times, said:
If you did not know what a maestro was, and you looked at Piero’s work, you then know the meaning of the word.
