Early life and education

Pat Sajak was born as Patrick Leonard Sajdak on October 26, 1946, in Chicago, United States. He belongs to the mixed ethnicity and holds an American nationality.

Sajak is the son of Patrick Leonard Sajak & Joyce Backal. His grandparents were Polish. His father was a factory worker. His mother left his father and married to Walter Backal.

Sajak has two brothers, David Sajdak and a half-brother, William Backal.

In 1964, Sajak graduated from the Farragut High School. Later, he attended the Columbia College Chicago & began to work as a desk clerk at the Palmer House hotel. During Vietnam War, he served as Disc Jockey in uniform for American Forces Vietnam Network.  


Sajak began his career after winning a contest on WLS radio shows being a guest teen deejay. When he joined the Columbia College, Broadcasting instructor informed him about the requirement of newsman on WEDC, Local radio station. He applied for the post & successfully grabbed it.

In 1981, Former media mogul Merv Giffin asked Sajak about his interest to host American game show, Wheel of Fortune. However, the then president, Fred Silverman, & CEO of NBC canceled his hiring for being too local. 

Furthermore, Sajak appeared in the episode of Inner Tube on American sitcom, 'The King of Queens’ in 2001. He started writing for National Review Online and in 2010.

Personal life

Pat Sajak married twice in his life. His first marriage was with Sherrill. The couple was married in 1979. He divorced his wife in 1986. However, the reason behind their divorce is unknown.

After divorced with his first wife, Sajak met Lesly Brown. The duo had almost one year of a love affair. They tied their knot on 31st December 1989. 

The couple has two children together; a son, Patrick Michael James Sajak and a daughter, Maggie Marie Sajak. The pair has two residences; one in Severna Park, Maryland & another in Los Angeles, California.
