A fire department spokesperson said six people were taken to hospital in Brownsville with some victims in a critical condition.
The New York City police department reported a 38-year-old man was killed in the shooting, who was hit by a single bullet in the head. He was pronounced dead in the hospital on arrival, and his identity is yet to be confirmed.
An official said the shooting, which occurred on late Saturday, left 11 or 12 people injured whose conditions are unknown. He further said no arrests had been made. Mayor Bill de Blasio took to his Twitter writing:
We had a terrible shooting in Brownsville tonight that shattered a peaceful neighborhood event. Our hearts go out to the victims.
The tweet further continued as:
We will do everything in our power to keep this community sage and get guns off our streets.
Photos posted on social media showed several people being taken from the scene on stretchers. Police have been investigating the case.
