Mohamed Salah

Inside Biography

Born and raised in Nagri, Gharbia, Mohamed Salah is an Egyptian professional footballer who currently plays for the Egyptian national team and Liverpool as a forward.

The footballer made his professional debut in 2010 playing for local youth club EI Mokawloon and his international debut in 2011 for Egypt national football team.

Became the first Egyptian international 

At the beginning of 2014, Salah became the first Egyptian international to sign for the English Premier League club, Chelsea.

After playing in the 2011 FIFA U-20 World Cup, the 2012 Summer Olympics, and the 2017 CAF Cup of Nations, he eventually made a place in the national team. He also became the top scorer of FIFA World Cup qualifications.

Early Life 

Born on June 15, 1992, in Nagri, Gharbia, Egypt, Mohamed Salah was born to an average middle-class family. Regarding his nationality, he is Egyptian, and ethnicity-wise, he is Arabic. He was interested in playing football from an early age.

Salah used to watch football on TV when he wasn’t playing. He first started playing for a local youth club El Mokawloon in Cairo. The club was far away from his hometown but he didn’t give up and his passion for the game kept him focused.

Improved his gameplay

The footballer eventually got a chance to play for the senior team when he was 18. At the beginning of his career, he mostly improved his game playing as a substitute player and finally started playing as a regular forward.

The Egyptian Premier League stopped and all subsequent games were postponed due to the Port Said Stadium disaster, in early February 2012. On March 10, 2012, the Egyptian Football Association canceled the season.

Early Career

Swiss Super League club organized a friendly match with the Egypt U-23 team. The match was held in the Stadion Rankhof, in Basel, on 16th March.

Though he only played during the second half, he scored twice in the second half in a 4-3 win for the Egypt U-23 team.

Debut playing a preliminary stage

Following his impressive performance in the friendly game, Salah made an agreement with Basel signing a four-year contract, on April 10, 2012.

He made his Basel debut playing a preliminary stage match against the Norwegian club Molde in a UEFA Champion League, on 8 August. 

Win against Tottenham Hotspur

Salah scored his first Europe League goal in a two-legged win against Tottenham Hotspur, on April 11, 2013. In his first season with Basel, he ended up scoring 10 goals in 50 games throughout the season.

Salah scored his first Champion League goal playing against Maccabi Tel Aviv on 6 August 2013 in the third qualifying round. He scored the winning goal in a victory over Chelsea during the return tie on 26 November at the St. Jakob-Park. He finished his career with Basel winning two titles.

Chelsea (2014-16)

At the beginning of 2014, Salah decided to make his transfer to Chelsea and become the first ever Egyptian footballer to play with Chelsea. He completed a $15,471,390 move to Chelsea from Basel. He made his Chelsea debut playing as a substitute in the 3-0 victory over Newcastle United, in the Premier League, on February 8, 2014.

Salah scored his first goal in Premier League in a 4-0 win over Arsenal in a derby at Stamford Bridge. For Chelsea, he scored two goals in 11 appearances in the 2013-14 season. He won the Premier Title with the Blues and soon after was sent on a loan to Fiorentina.

Loan to Fiorentina (2014-15)

As part of the loan deal, Fiorentina sent Juan Cuadrado to Chelsea while Salah joined the Seria A side. He made his Fiorentina debut when he came off the bench in the 65th minute in a game against Atlanta. They won the match 3-2.

Salah scored his first goal for the team on February 14, playing against Sassuolo. Twelve days after, Salah scored his first European goal for Fiorentina beating Tottenham Hotspur 3–1 on aggregate in the Europe League.

Made an agreement with Salah

At first, Fiorentina made an agreement with Salah to make the move permanent but at the end of the season,

Salah refused the deal and he even did not complete his 18-month loan agreement and instead moved to Roma. He finished the 2014-15 season with Fiorentina scoring 7 goals and 4 assists in 18 matches.

Roma and Liverpool

After turning down the opportunity to complete a permanent move to Fiorentina, Salah went on to join a professional Italian football club Roma, on 6th August 2015. Roma made an agreement on a season-long loan for $6,176,750.

Salah scored his first goal of the season against Sassuolo, on 20th September. He scored his first hat-trick for the club in a 3-0 victory over Bologna, at the Stadio Olimpico, on 6th November. He became Player of the Season scoring 15 goals throughout the competitions.

Transferred to his current club Liverpool

Following his magnificent performance with Roma, Salah transferred to his current club Liverpool on June 22, 2017. Liverpool signed him for a reported fee of €42m which will increase up to €50 million, a record fee for the club. On August 12, he scored his first goal for the club playing against Watford in a 3-3 draw.  

Before going to the International break, Salah scored two goals to win over West Ham and Southampton in Premier League.

International Career

Salah made his international debut for the Egypt national team in 2011 playing against Sierra Leone. In October 2011, he scored his first international goal for his country in a 3–0 win against Niger. And scored his first international hat-trick on June 9, 2013, in a 4–2 away win against Zimbabwe.   

Salah also became the top scorer for Egypt securing five goals during the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations held in Gabon.

As of 2022, Mohamed Salah's estimated net worth is around $88 million. During his football career with Florentina, he earned an annual salary of $3 million.

In January 2014, Salah signed a contract with the English Premier League club Chelsea for a reported transfer fee of $15,580,510 and become the first Egyptian player to sign for an English Premier League club.

After that, Salah joined Roma on August 6, 2015, signing a season-long loan for $6,176,750 with the option of buying him permanently for a reported fee of $18,496,650.
