Monaghan was born as Michelle Lynn Monaghan on March 23, 1976, in Winthrop, Iowa, United States. She holds an American nationality and belongs to the mixed ethnicity. She has Irish and German ancestry and was raised Catholic.
Monaghan is the youngest daughter born to Sharon (her mother) and Robert Monaghan (her father). Her mother ran the day care center from the past 40 years whereas her father was a factory worker.
