Melissa Ellen Gilbert is an American actress, TV director, producer, and politician. She started her career as a child actress in the late 1960s appearing in numerous commercials and guest-starring roles on television.
She worked as the President of the Screen Actors Guild from 2001 to 2005. She ran for U.S. Congress as a Democrat in Michigan's 8th congressional district in 2016 and won the Democratic primary.

Melissa was born to a newly engaged couple in Los Angeles. David Darlington and Kathy Wood who were her biological parents put her for adoption immediately after her birth. A day later she got adopted by actor and comedian Paul Gilbert and his wife Barbara Crane who was a dancer and an actress.
She had an adopted brother named Jonathan. When she was eight years old her parents got divorced. Paul Gilbert died of a stroke on February 1,3, 1976 at the age of 56. Melissa was brought up in Jewish religion without any conversion ceremony.

Melissa started off doing commercials and before she landed upon the part of Laura Ingalls on NBC’s series Little House on the Prairie she had already done dozens of commercials. The one she did for Alpo dog food with Lorne Greene was popular. She began filming the series around the year 1978.
While her show ‘Little house….’ was running she appeared in many popular TV movies like The Diary of Anne Frank and The Miracle Worker. After the series, she kept working regularly, mostly on TV.
She appeared in the biopic Choices of the Heart as Jean Donovan in1983 and also in 3 episodes of Babylon 5 as Anna Sheridan in 1996.
She also gave her voice in animated series like ‘Batman…The Animated Series’. Gilbert took part in Season 14 of the reality dancing show, ‘Dancing With the Stars’.
During a dance performance she fell down and hurt her leg as well she suffered a mild concussion and had to be taken to the hospital.
But she came to join and got in the top 5. She was eliminated on the day of her birthday. From 2001 to 2005 she was the president of the Screen Actors Guild. Her autobiography Prairie Tale: A Memoir was released in 2009.
