Maria Penelope Katharine Aitken was born on 12 September 1945 in Dublin to Sir William Aitken who is a Conservative MP, and to her mother Penelope Aitken, whose father was John Maffey who was the 1st Baron Rugby. Marias grandfather was the UK Representative to Ireland from the year 1939 to 1949. Aitken has a strong family background with her being the great-niece of newspaper magnate and war-time minister Lord Beaverbrook.
Maria went on to attend Sherborne School for Girls based in Dorset. She then joined St Anne's College, Oxford, where she went on to graduate with a degree in English Language and Literature. She has directed several plays in the West End and on Broadway. She is a Visiting Lecturer at Yale, NYU and Juilliard drama schools. Maria has played lead roles at the Royal National Theatre, the Royal Shakespeare Company and in the West End.
