The aggressive, physical, and hard-tackling center-back, Marco Materazzi was considered to be one of the best defenders of his generation. Widely known for his tight marking of opponents, Marco is a former professional footballer and former manager of Indian Super League club Chennaiyin. He started his footballing career playing with various Italian teams, and during his club career, he also won numerous major honors with Inter including five Serie A league titles in a row from 2006 to 2010, FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Champions League, four Coppa Italia titles, and the Supercoppa Italiana four times. Due to his outstanding aerial ability, he also became one of the key players in the 2006 FIFA World Cup Final.

Marco Materazzi was born on August 19, 1973, in Lecce, Italy. He is the son born to Giuseppe Materazzi, an Italian football manager and former player and Anna Inzaina. His father, during his career, managed several football teams like Pisa, Lazio, Sporting CP, and Tianjin Teda. He followed his father's footsteps and used to play for local clubs during his early childhood. 

Materazzi belongs to Italian nationality, and his ethnicity/race is Caucasian. He has three siblings, two brothers named Simone Materazzi and Matteo Materazzi, and sister Monia Materazzi

Marco Materazzi's Club Career

Marco Materazzi started his football career with the Italian football club Messina Peloro and played for a year in the 1990-91 season. During his early career, he played for several lower divisions clubs including Tor di Quinto, Marsala, and Trapani

Materazzi then made his transfer to Internazionale signing a contract for €10 million in 2001. He became the top scoring defender of Serie A after he scored 10-goals during the 2006-07 season and led the team to win their 15th league title.

 On 22 September 2014, Materazzi signed a contract of $1 million as the player-manager of Chennaiyin FC in the inaugural season of the Indian Super League. He helped the team to the Indian Super League championship at the end of the 2015 season. 

International Career 

Marco Materazzi made his full international debut playing as a defender for the Italy national team in a 1-0 friendly match win against Sout Africa on April 25th, 2001. He registered his first international goal playing as a reserve player in the 2006 FIFA Wolrd Cup group match against the Czech Republic and was named Man of the Match.

Materazzi then led his country to win their fourth FIFA World Cup scoring a goal in the penalty shootout  5–3 against France. 

Controversy With Zinedine Zidane

The footballer was considered as an aggressive and hard-talking center-back and was punished with several red cards for his unidisciplinary behavior at the pitch.  

But his most infamous case came during the finals of 2006 World Cup when he was headbutted by then French captain and forward Zinedine Zidane. In between the match, Materazzi claimed that he grabbed Zidane's jersey and in responded, Zidane sarcastically said to him "If you want my shirt, I will give to you afterward".  And then Macro replied, "Preferisco la puttana di tua sorella" (I would prefer your wh**e of a sister). 

The confrontation resulted in Zidane headbutting Materazzi. Three British tabloid newspapers, the Daily Star, the Daily Mail, The Sun, claimed that  Materazzi had called Zidane "the son of a terrorist wh**e."  Materazzi filed legal cases against all three newspapers after which the allegations were withdrawn. He was fined CHF 5,000 FIFA and faced a penalty of a two-match ban.
