Controversy With Zinedine Zidane
The footballer was considered as an aggressive and hard-talking center-back and was punished with several red cards for his unidisciplinary behavior at the pitch.
But his most infamous case came during the finals of 2006 World Cup when he was headbutted by then French captain and forward Zinedine Zidane. In between the match, Materazzi claimed that he grabbed Zidane's jersey and in responded, Zidane sarcastically said to him "If you want my shirt, I will give to you afterward". And then Macro replied, "Preferisco la puttana di tua sorella" (I would prefer your wh**e of a sister).
The confrontation resulted in Zidane headbutting Materazzi. Three British tabloid newspapers, the Daily Star, the Daily Mail, The Sun, claimed that Materazzi had called Zidane "the son of a terrorist wh**e." Materazzi filed legal cases against all three newspapers after which the allegations were withdrawn. He was fined CHF 5,000 FIFA and faced a penalty of a two-match ban.
