While he was delivering newspapers on his Cushman motor scooter in La Puente, California a truck speeding by collided with him. As a result of the impact, Laughlin was thrown 40 feet down the highway. Unfortunately succumbed to his injuries. Fortunately, his 16-year-old friend who was also riding on the scooter survived with injuries.

Laughlin, who held the distinction of being a member of Our Gang cast at that time now rests at Rose Hills Memorial Park Cemetery, in Whittier, California alongside his parents.
