Three gunmen stormed a five-star hotel in the Pakistani province of Balochistan killing at least one security guard. The gunmen were later shot dead by the security forces, officials said.
The attackers targetted the Zaver Pear-Continental Hotel in the strategic port city of Gwadar which is the famous hotel for top government officials and foreign visitors. A spokesperson for the hotel said there were no guests and a few staff due to Ramadan. But, earlier reports said the guests were evacuated.
The shooting that started at around 4:50 (local) killed at least one guard who tried to stop them at the entrance. Within minutes, security forces entered the hotel and started a gun battle with the militants.
The separatist Balochistan Liberation Army took the responsibility of the attack which said it attacked the centerpiece of a multi-billion-dollar Chinese project to oppose Chinese investment. It further added the hotel is of little benefit to local people.
China is building the hotel as part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), a network of roads, railway and pipelines between two neighboring countries.
The shooting comes weeks after shooters killed 14 people including 11 military personnel in the region. Meanwhile, the Chinese emba s sy in Pakistan condemned the attack.
