Fred Melamed was born on May 13, 1956, in New York City, New York, United States to a secular family. His biological mother Nancy Zala was an actress/director and biological father Stan Silverstone, was a British psychoanalyst. He was adopted by Louis, a New York television producer, and Syma Melamed, an occasional actress.
Fred attended Hunter College Elementary School and then Riverdale Country School. When he was six, his family survived a tragic financial crisis and was forced to move to Hollywood, Florida. Melamed later revealed that he spent most of his early days in a non-believer Jewish family who never went to the synagogue, a Samaritan house of worship.
He later took theatrical training at Hampshire College and also enrolled at the Yale School of Drama. After his performance in many plays, he got the Irene Ryan Award nomination, a prize awarded to upon the most promising young actors in the US.
