RIP Thad Mumford. I sat next to him every day for two years, ate lunch with him just about every day for two years, and loved him and his humor and silliness for the many years that we were friends. The Brooks Brothers store in Bev Hills should be wearing a black armband.

We had a vegetable strainer in the MASH room. Don't know why. (Never occurred to me to ask.) My favorite memory of Thad Mumford is him playing air guitar, one leg straight out as he hopped around the room, singing "Oh Boy" by Buddy Holly, with the vegetable strainer on his head.

Born and raised in Washington D.C., Mumford began his career in acting in the 70s, when only a few of African-Americans were given opportunities in the industry.

Mumford worked as a page for the local NBC affiliated WRC-TV while he was in high school. After completion of his high school, he moved to New York City where he worked as a writer on PBS' The Electric Company. Mumford won the Emmy Award for his work in 1973.

Mumford is survived by his sister-in-law Coleman, brother Jeffrey Mumford, niece Josephine Coleman-Mumford; stepmother Gloria Mumford, stepsister Karen Cooper, and stepbrother Donnell Cooper.

We conduct our condolence to the late writer and producer Thad Mumford and his bereaved family members.
