According to Fox News, Adams told police he felt "unsafe" by the teen's choice of music. He also said he had been attacked previously by the people listening to rap. He went on saying the teen had done nothing to provoke him and he attacked him to prevent the probable attack.

Meanwhile, the Arizona Department of Correction said Adam was released from jail just a couple of days before the attack. His attorney told his client has a history of mental illness and was released from the prison without any medication.
