Alfreð Finnbogason was born on February 1, 1989, in Grindavik, Iceland. At the age of 6, he played for his hometown, Grindavik's youth team. He moved to Edinburgh for two years as his father studied in the city. While he played for Hutchison Vale, he became of fan of Hibernian.

He made a total of 43 appearances scoring 28 goals. One of his best season for Breiðablik came in 2010 as he became a joint league top goalscorer with 14 goals. On April 19, 2013, he broke the record of most goals scored in a season by an Icelandic footballer playing in a top division in any country after netting his 24th goal.
As of 2018, he plays for German football club FC Augsburg. In 2017 season he scored two hat-tricks one in September against FC Koln and other in December against SC Freiburg.
