Born in the year 191 August 27 in Singapore to Black American parents, Yalonda has the American citizenship and belongs to the African ethnicity. She has six siblings and she is the oldest one. Her family later moved back to United States in Texas where she went to attend Sterling High School in 1979. She is graduated from Texas Southern University. After completion of her graduation, Yalonda began to work as a schoolteacher and part time model. However within a very brief time, she wanted to be full time lead singer and gave up the jobs and been dedicated in this profession ever since.
Yalonde used to sing in her church choir. Yalonda was first signed by theSoundof Gospel records and released herfirst album entitled Just As I Am in 1987. In 1990, she signed with Tribute records and released the next album titled Through the Storm. The album helped her to develop an audience. In 1994, Yalonda’s jazzy voice was featured in Ben Tankard’s 1994 release Play Me in Your Key in the video song titled “You Bring The Best in Me”, which yield the most positive response from gospel and jazz. In 1995, she released another album titled More than a Melody. Songs from the Heart was her final release from Verity Records which includes the popular songs like Only Believe and Still I Rise.
After the release of her album Mountain High…Valley Low in 1999 from Elektra Records, she began to be grab the attention outside the United States. The album includes the hit sings like Yeah, Fragile Heart and Open my heart. The album was the 2X Platinum in 2000 and awarded Yalonda with a Grammy Award. In 2000, she released a Christmas album followed by a live album called the Experience in 2001. The album gave her the second Grammy Award for the Best Contemporary Soul Gospel Album. Her next album in 2001 titled Believe includes a hit song called Never Give Up which helped her reach to the gold status according to RIAA. In the same year she released a compilation CD entitled The Divas of Gospel. Yalonda did not release any album till four years afterwards but returned with a massive successful album Day by Day in 2005. The album charted higher than her previous album Mountain High...Valley Low. In 2007, she signed with the Columbia Records and released an album What a Wonderful time. In 2011, Yalonda released her eleventh album Becoming which awarded her with the Best Gospel Artist for the 4th time in the career winning the most BET awards since 2001. In 2013, she announced that she is working on her twelfth studio album.
Besides a gospel singer, she has also sung in a movie called Honey in a song “I Believe” in 2003. She has been a judge for the 2nd annual Independent Music Awards. She is also a host to a radio program called The Yolanda Adams Morning show from New York’s hit gospel station WBLS, now airs on Urban Gospel stations owned by Radio One.. In 2010, she released a book entitled “Points of Power” which is a Christian book referring to living a pure, spirit filled Christian Life.
