A Tony and Emmy winning writer, producer, and director Martin Charnin, who turned a Depression-era comic into Annie, has died on 6th July, Saturday, at a hospital in White Plains, New York. He was 84 years old.

Martin’s daughter, Sasha Charnin Morrison confirmed his death news and also revealed that he suffered a heart attack three years earlier.

After graduating from The High School of Music & Art and The Cooper Union, Martin started his theatrical career as a performer appearing in West Side Story.

Martin then wrote lyrics and music for many Off-Broadway and cabaret revues. He then went on to write, produce, and direct nightclub acts for Nancy Wilson, Larry Kert, Dionne Warwick, Marty Travers, Leslie Uggams, and Jose Ferrer.

Martin directed, produced, written, and conceived movies and television shows like The Jackie Gleason Show, Dames at Sea, Feathertop, Annie, The Woman in the Life of a Man, Get Happy, Cole Porter in Paris, The Annie Christmas Show, and many others.

However, Martin is best known for conceiving, directing, and writing the lyrics of Annie. Anne opened in 1977 in Broadway and ran for over 2,377 performances.

Martin lived with his wife, Shelly Burch, in New York and was enjoying a healthy married life until his death. He had two children; Randy Charnin and Sasha Charnin Morrison. He had three grandchildren; Maxwell Charnin, Gus, and Oliver Morrison.
