A defender in football is a player, positioned to defend the opposition from attacking. Centre-back, sweeper, full-back and wing-back are the types of defenders out of which the centre-back and full-back positions are essential in most modern formations whereas the sweeper and wing-back roles are more specialized for certain formations. The job of the centre-back is to stop strikers from scoring, job of sweeper is to sweep up the ball if opponents breach the defensive line.
