Sean Gilmartin was born on May 8, 1990, in Moorpark, California, United States and was raised in California, his birthplace. Gilmartin's nationality is American and holds U.S citizenship.

Sean Gilmartin started his professional career with the Atlanta Braves. And he made his official appearance in Major League Baseball Draft in 2001 from the team. Gilmartin also played with the Rome Braves, the Gwinnett Braves, the Gulf Coast League Braves and Mississippi Braves, while he was in the Atlanta farm.
In 2012 season, Gilmartin was on the fifth spot in the Baseball America. Later in 2013, Gilmartin he was called for the spring training but he was not included in the team. Gilmartin has played the Cla s s AAA International League for the Gwinnett Braves.
In 2013 season, he played for the Minnesota Twins after he was traded by the Braves on December 18, 2013. Gilmartin was also pitched for the Rochester Red Wings and New Britain Rock Cats in 2014. Gilmartin finished 2-4, 4.28 ERA in 14 games in 73.2 innings pitched with 59 strikeouts with the Red Wings and he finished 7-3, 3.12 ERA in 12 games in 72 innings pitched with 74 strikeouts with Rock Cats.
In 2014, Gilmartin was selected by the New York Mets from the Twins in the Rule 5 draft. He made his first major league appearance on April 10, 2014, the game against the Braves. Gilmartin has performed very well in his current squad and has also won several awards.
