Polley was born to Harry Gulkin, casting director and Diane Elizabeth, an actress. Her father died due to cancer in the week of Polley's 11th birthday. Later, she was raised by her stepfather, Michael Polley, a British-born actor who became an insurance agent after Diane and he started a family.
Polley has four siblings, Mark Polley, Joanna Polley, Susan Buchan, and John Buchan. Her mother Diane had Scottish ancestry.
Polley went to Subway Academy II. Later, she joined Earl Haig Secondary School but dropped out at age fifteen.

Sarah Polly began her career at an early age, appearance in Disney film One Magic Christmas. After that, she appeared as a lead role in the Canadian TV series, Ramona from 1987 to 1988.

Polly made her directing debut with the short movie, The Best Day of My Life followed by Don’t Think Twice in 1999. She won the Genie Award for Best Live Action Short Drama for her movie, Shout Love.

Previously, Polley got married David Wharnsby who is a Canadian Universalist Muslim poet, singer-songwriter, performer, educator as well as a television personality.
However, after living together for more than five years, they divorced in 2008.
