After graduating from Occidental College, Roger Guenveur Smith joined Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut to receive further education.

Roger Guenveur Smith professional acting career took off since Roger Guenveur Smith since the mid-1980s. He appeared in the role of Pinter, Ionesco, Shakespeare, and Dickens in Minneapolis and at the New Shakespeare festival. He has a recurring role in the 1990s film A Different world.
