Michael D. Symon was born on 19th September 1969 in Cleveland, Ohio to father Dennis Symon and mother Angel Symon. Symon is of Greek, Italian and Eastern European ancestry. He grew up in North Olmsted; Ohio where he attended St. Richard School based in North Olmsted and joined St. Edward High School in Lakewood from where he graduated in 1987.

He joined the Culinary Institute of America based in Hyde Park, New York and graduated in 1990. Meanwhile, he began working as a part-time cook at Gepetto’s on Warren Rd. Eventually, Symon began working on the Cleveland restaurant scene at a Mediterranean restaurant named Player’s based in Lakewood. Finally, he became a chef and then moved to Piccolo Mondo in 1993.
Symon has also published a number of books like The Soul of a Chef: The Journey Toward Perfection, and Michael Symon's Live to Cook: Recipes and Techniques to Rock Your Kitchen.

Symon worked there for a few years before moving to Caxton Café. Symon and his current wife Liz Shanahan opened a restaurant in 1997 named Lola in Cleveland’s trendy Tremont neighborhood. Lola is the name of Symon’s aunt. The restaurant was formerly owned by Vermont food scene pioneers Gerry Groh and Lynda Khoury and was named Bohemia.
After successful years, the couple finally decided to sell it to Symon and Liz. Lola alone was given ravishing reviews one of which being America’s Best Restaurant in Gourmet magazine in its October 2000 issue. Symon later converted Lola into Lolita and reopened Lola in downtown Cleveland 2006.

For Lola and Lolita’s success, Symon was named Best Local Chef by Cleveland Magazine in 2007. After Lola and Lolita’s success, Symon opened his third restaurant in 15th April 2006 named Paris (Greek meaning “a group of friends” or in New York City it means “company”) located on East 20th Street near Park Avenue.
Paris specialized in upscale Greek food. Symon himself gave only 2 stars to the food but the New York Times food critic stated that the sound level reached “piercing heights”.
Food & Wine magazine even named Paris on “100 Tastes to try in 07” but it closed in 2007. Then in the autumn of 2008, Symon went on to open a restaurant at the Westin Book Cadillac Hotel based in Detroit, Michigan named Roast. Success followed as it was named the 2009 Restaurant of the Year by the Detroit Free Press.
Then on 1st July 2009, Michael Symon opened his fourth restaurant named Bar Symon in Avon Lake, Ohio. Bar Symon specialized in casual concept on tavern food. Then again he opened a similar restaurant in Woodmere Ohio named B Spot. Symon announced on 19th October 2010 that he would be closing the Avon Lake location of Bar Symon which was a letdown to many customers.
But then, later on, he announced that he would be opening two more B Spot one in Strongsville and the other in Westlake. B spot locations started to pop up everywhere one of which was opened at the Horseshoe Casino Cleveland and another opened on the club level at Cleveland Browns Stadium for the 2012 NFL season.
Then again Symon decided to open another Bar Symon in Pittsburgh International Airport-Airmail in partnership with United Concessions Group and The Parkside Shops on 25th July 2012. Symon was seen promoting the Food Network’s video game Cook Or Be Cooked for Nintendo Wii during the summer of 2009. He also appeared as a rotating host in Food Network’s Melting Pot. He lost on Iron Chef America in 2005 but he won Iron Chef America on 18th November 2007.
In an episode, Michael Symon and Michael Psilakis teamed up to take on twin brothers Nicola and Fabrizio Carro.
