Mary Kaye Huntsman was born on September 10, 1961, in Orlando, Florida as Mary Kaye Cooper to an Episcopalian family. Her father was Charles Floyd Cooper and mother was Mary Anne Galloway.

Being born and raised in Orlando in her early days, Mary Huntsman received her early education from a local school in Orlando. While she was studying in grade nine, her family moved to Utah where she attended at Highland High School where she met her future husband Jon Huntsman, Jr.
