Akanji belongs to the family of multi-talents as his sisters, Michelle Akanji, is an athlete and Sarah Akanji plays football for FC Winterthur in the Swiss second division. He started his football career playing at the local club in Wiesendangen.

Manual Akanji took his first professional step joining the Swiss club Basel on 15 April 2015 and played his first Swiss Super League match against FC Lugano. With the club, he won Swiss Super League twice as well as Swiss Cup. 

His association with the club earned him further praise as well as won a number of individuals accolades for his incredible performance for the club. Following the series of victories, the club also confirmed its spot for the 2017-18 UEFA Champions League.
