The 16th season of singing reality competition The Voice ended Tuesday night crowning Maelyn Jarmon, the winner. The 26-year-old singer's victory marks the first victory for the new coach John Legend.
The Texas-native came over three other finalists; country singing contestants Gyth Regdon, Dexter Roberts, and Andrew Sevener who came first, second and third runner-up respectively. All the other three contestants were from team Blake Shelton.
Following the final, winning coach Legend told reporters at the winner's press conference,
I really love Blake and I've really enjoyed getting to know him this year. He's a very arrogant bastard. I had a feeling he was going to kiss someone's a** after this show and I was right.
Maelyn's friends and family who were seen sporting "Maelyn" shirts in the audience broke in tears as she was declared the winner of the competition. Her boyfriend, Johnny Murrell joined her onstage following the announcement where singer Legend also joined the party.
Despite Jarmon's hearing deficiency, she pursued a career in music since an early teen. When she was 2, she had a tube inserted in her ears to treat recurring ear infections, but unfortunately, the tubes damaged her eardrum leading her to complete deafness in her right ear and left with only 80% hearing in the left. Ahead of the finale, she told reporters:
I've considered it a superpower since I was young. It was never discussed as a disability through my house. It was never really talked about much at all.
She added,
It has been, sometimes, an issue but mostly an advantage.
Before the final, coach Adam Levine predicted Maelyn would take the title home. Following her performance Monday night, Levine told her,
Everyone in the finale is fantastic, but I believe you are the one who should be winning the thing.
The star-studded finale featured the performances by Jonas Brothers, BTS, Taylor Swift, Brendon Urie.
