Comedian Kevin Hart Says He Won't Be Hosting 91st Oscar In 2019

  • Actor and comedian Kevin Hart steps down as a host of the 91st Oscar.
  • After his tweets that dated from 2009 to 2011 surfaced on social media, the 39-year-old decided to step aside of his job.
  • The tweets included derogatory language referring to gay people.
  • The Academy is yet to announce a replacement to Hart after his declaration.

Comedian Kevin Hart announced he will not host the 91st Academy Awards. After his controversial h 0phobic tweets surfaced around the web, the Central Intelligence actor stepped down from his job.

On Thursday, 6th December, Hart said he would not apologize for his tweet and just hours after his declaration, he said he would step aside from the prestigious gig. He finally said sorry for his tweet.

He wrote on his Twitter:

I have made the choice to step down from hosting this year's Oscar's...this is because I do not want to be a distraction on a night that should be celebrated by so many amazing talented artists. I sincerely apologize to the LGBTQ community for my insensitive words from my past.

Hart wrote "I'm sorry that I hurt people," in his another tweet. In one of his Instagram posts, Hart said Academy asked him to apologize for his posts. 

The tweets that dated between 2009 and 2011 included derogatory language referring to gay people. He also made the disparaging comments about sexuality on series of tweets-most of which have since been deleted.

An LGBT civil rights advocacy group head, Chad Griffin responded to Hart's tweet saying:

You have a rare opportunity to take responsibility, teach people at this moment & send a message to LGBTQ youth that they matter & deserve dignity & respect. You say you've grown. Show us. Make amends for hurtful things you've said & affirmed LGBTQ people.

The Academy has not yet announced who will be replacing Hart in the 91st Academy awards which will be hosted on February 25, 2019.
