John Hurt was born John Vincent Hurt on January 22, 1940, in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, England, the youngest of three children, to engineer Phyllis Ma s sey and mathematician Arnold Herbert Hurt.
He attended St. Michael's Preparatory School in Otford, Kent, and later, Lincoln School. He trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art for two years.
Hurt died aged 77, almost to the day, on January 25, 2017, at his home in Cromer, Norfolk. He reportedly died of natural causes despite having had a bout of early-stage pancreatic cancer in 2015 that went into remission.
