It was announced on 1st October 2018 that the popular media personality joined The Atlantic's magazine as a staff writer. Jemele Juanita Hill was born on 21 December 1975, in Michigan, U.S.A. She was the daughter born to Jarel Brickerson and Denise Dennard. She was raised up in her hometown Michigan. She used to love playing and watching baseball. 

As a child, Hill loved writing stories–especially short stories about rich lawyers. Later she wanted to be a sportswriter than a story writer. She subscribed to Detroit News and Detroit Free Press Sports magazine and read every section. 

Hill later got involved in jobs that weren't journalism background. She worked at a snack counter and also worked as one who delivers phone books in college. She studied in Mumford High school from the year 1990 to 1993 and later completed her graduation in 1997 from Michigan State University and majored in Journalism.

In the year 1997, Jemele Hill started working general a s signment sports writer for the Raleigh News & Observer. She also worked as a sports writer with the Detroit Free Press and where she covered Michigan State football and basketball. After that, she landed a job as a general sports columnist in The Orlando Sentinel and worked for a year from 2005-06. 

The biggest turning point came in her career when Hill landed a job in ESPN as a columnist and television contributor. She made an appearance on TV like SportsCenter as well as worked in a number of ESPN programs like  ESPN First Take, Outside the Lines, and The Sports Reporters.
