Jane Hawking grew up in St Albans, Hertfordshire. She attended Westfield College for languages studied, where she met Stephen Hawking in the early 1960s.
After years on her doctoral thesis through Westfield College and in April 1981, she got her Ph.D. in medieval Spanish poetry. When Jane Hawking was compelled to do a Ph.D., therefor that Hawking would have an academic identity of her own within Cambridge.

After getting married to Stephen Hawking while he was ill, Jane became the victim of depression. While giving an interview in 2004, she said that her Christian faith giver her hope while dealing with depression.
