Gloria was silent for a while when the doctor broke the news of cancer to her.
Anderson claimed that her mother died as she lived on her own terms.
Gloria, who was born into one of the wealthiest families in the United States on 20th February 1924, had established herself as an actress, artist, author, and fashion designer. Her father was the railroad heir Reginald Claypoole Vanderbilt who died from cirrhosis of the liver when she was only eighteen months old.
Gloria was then left in the care of her mother. When her mother traveled and partied, she was then raised by her beloved nanny “Dodo” and grandmother “Naney.”
When she was ten years old, she found herself in the custody battle of the century between her aunt and her mother. Her aunt won the custody after revealing that Gloria’s mother was a lesbian and painted her as an unfit mom.
During her teen days, she moved to Hollywood, where she developed a fondness for older men. She went on dates with actors like Errol Flynn, Ray Milland, and George Montgomery. She was also in a relationship with Howard Hughes and Frank Sinatra.
Gloria was married four times and divorced in the same number. She was first married to Pat DiCicco in 1941 when she was only 17. The couple divorced in 1945 after being married for four years.
In the same year of divorce, Gloria got married to Leopold Stokowski in 1945. After a decade long married life, the couple got divorced in 1955. She then tied the knot with Sidney Lumet in 1956 and got divorced in 1963, followed by Wyatt Emory Cooper (m. 1963 – d. 1978).
