American Rapper, Gillie aka King of Philly, started his journey of rapping through music group Major Figgas. The group consisted of seven members and was contracted by Suave House Records at the end of the '90s. However, things didn't go well, and Suave Records canceled the contract after Suave lost its distribution with Universal. After the cancellation of the contract, Gillie decided to pursue a career as a rapper as a solo artist. After a show in Philadelphia, Gillie met Cash Money CEO Bryan "Baby" Williams, and he was signed to the New Orleans label almost immediately. However, due to disagreements over his publishing, a solo album never materialized; instead, he worked as a ghostwriter. He left Cash Money, as did big artists B.G. and Mannie Fresh before him, but stayed on good terms with Lil Wayne until 2006 when Wayne made a series of unfair comments towards Gillie on one of his mixtapes.
He eventually signed a deal with Babygrande Records, which released The Best of the GDK Mixtapes compilation in March 2007. He released the track "Get Down on the Ground" in 2008, which Soulja Boy covered in 2013 as "Get Down." In 2015, he debuted his first album, Welcome 2 Gilladelphia, and released a series of mixtapes titled King of Philly. Gillie was not only destined for music.
